How to choose a business name

Coming up with a business name can be pretty challenging at times. It is the permanent title your company will be identified with for the entirety of its lifespan—no pressure! Not to worry, here are a couple of quick and easy tips to help you come up with your business name.

1. Be Basic But Not Overly Complex

When you are choosing a name for your business or brand, try to choose a name as basic and loose as you can think of, that also does NOT peg you into one industry. There are a lot of industries that fall on “restricted” lists.

2. Choose Something Easy To Remember

Choosing unique names that are also somewhat basic may also make it easier for consumers to remember, and/or discover. For example, Sal’s Pizza is a business name that is basic (it follows a very common formula in pizzerias names; e.g. [name]’s pizza) while also being unique to the owner’s name or surname.

The common formula will make it easier for your target audience—in the case of the example, they are pizza lovers—to find your business when searching for pizza places near them. If the pizzeria brand were to be titled something less common, it will be unique to their personality BUT it will also make it more difficult to come across over the internet, as well as confuse consumers to misidentify what you may be selling.

3. Consulting-specific Over Industry-Specific

General consulting-type names work best as nobody will deny you then, any other industry-specific name very well might restrict your ability to get money with some lending sources and credit issuers.
